Wegner Separates from Commissioner for Russian Germans Amid Allegations of Misconduct

In a significant political development, Berlin's Governing Mayor has distanced himself from Walter Gauks, the Senate Commissioner for Russian Germans and Displaced Persons, following allegations of misconduct. The Landeskriminalamt (LKA) is reportedly investigating Gauks in connection with financial irregularities tied to his previous leadership of the Lyra Marzahn association.

The Senate spokesperson articulated the Mayor's stance, emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation into the allegations, which, if substantiated, could undermine the integrity of the office responsible for representing Russian Germans and displaced individuals in Berlin.

Gauks, who was appointed to his current position in January 2024 under the new administration led by Wegner, has faced scrutiny for his management of public funds during his tenure at the Lyra Marzahn association. These concerns have been lingering since reports surfaced about the LKA's investigations into the association's financial practices.

In light of these allegations, the Green Party faction in the Berlin House of Representatives has called for Gauks to temporarily suspend his duties until the investigations are concluded. They expressed their commitment to ensuring that the representation of Russian Germans and displaced persons remains untainted by these serious accusations.

Furthermore, the district office of Marzahn-Hellersdorf is also reviewing the use of project funds associated with Gauks, as there are suggestions that the former board may have committed fraud. This inquiry was confirmed by a spokesperson for the district office.

Despite the mounting pressure, Gauks has consistently denied any wrongdoing, referring to a prior examination of the association's financial statements by the tax authorities as evidence of his compliance.

As the situation unfolds, the focus remains on the implications of these allegations for Gauks' role and the broader impact on the representation of Russian Germans within the Berlin government.
