Weber Advocates for Equitable Trade Deal with the United States

In the ongoing global trade conflict, Manfred Weber, the leader of the European People's Party (EPP), has called for a robust response from the European Union (EU) to the recent tariff package announced by U.S. President Donald Trump. Weber emphasized the necessity for the EU to stand firm against the pressure exerted by the U.S. administration, asserting that the EU is prepared to negotiate, but only on equal terms.

Weber pointed out that the EU holds a significant share of the global economy, accounting for 22%, compared to the U.S.'s 25%. He described the announcement of the tariffs as a 'dark day' and a considerable miscalculation on the part of the U.S. President. However, he expressed optimism that lessons could be learned from these mistakes.

Asserting that Europe has the potential to become a 'beacon of fair trade relations', Weber urged the EU to take proactive steps to secure new trade agreements. He specifically called for the completion of the Mercosur agreement with South American nations and the initiation of a trade pact with India, framing these agreements as countermeasures to U.S. trade policies.

Furthermore, Weber cautioned against deepening economic ties with China, highlighting concerns over the country's ambitions for a new global order. He stated that allowing China to take the lead as the dominant force in global trade would not align with Europe's interests.

Weber's statements reflect a broader concern within the EU regarding the implications of U.S. trade policy and the need for a unified response that upholds the principles of fair trade. As the EU navigates these challenges, the focus remains on establishing equitable and beneficial trade relationships that can withstand external pressures.
