Weather Forecast: A Warm Front Sparks Anticipation for Spring

Tue 18th Feb, 2025

As winter continues to grip parts of eastern Germany with frigid temperatures, many are looking forward to the arrival of spring as a warm front begins to move in from the west. According to the German Weather Service (DWD), temperatures in western Germany could reach up to 19 degrees Celsius by Friday.

The current weather pattern is characterized by cold nights, particularly in eastern regions where icy conditions persist. During the day, however, clear skies and dry air promise plenty of sunlight and warmth. On Wednesday, daytime temperatures are expected to hover between two and five degrees Celsius, with western areas seeing highs of around eight degrees. In the east, some locations may experience persistent frost, limiting maximum temperatures to around zero degrees.

The shift in weather is anticipated to begin on Wednesday as clouds associated with the warm front move in from France. This front will bring not only milder temperatures but also increased cloud cover and light rain. The first light showers may arrive in the western and southwestern regions on Thursday morning, where there is also a potential for icy patches to form.

The warm front is progressing slowly and is not expected to reach eastern Germany until Friday. Meteorologists caution that icy conditions could remain a risk during the night and early morning hours. On Thursday, highs in the east will be limited to two to five degrees Celsius, while the west enjoys more favorable conditions with temperatures ranging from ten to fifteen degrees.

As Friday approaches, the weather in northern Germany is predicted to be mostly overcast, with rain gradually moving eastward. In central Germany, clouds are expected to clear throughout the day, resulting in minimal precipitation. Southern regions are likely to have clear skies after morning fog dissipates.

Temperatures in the east and southeast are forecasted to rise to between five and ten degrees, while other areas may see temperatures soar to between ten and sixteen degrees. Notably, in the river valleys of western and southwestern Germany, temperatures could reach as high as 18 or even 19 degrees Celsius. However, temperatures are set to drop overnight into Saturday, with lows of ten degrees in the Lower Rhine region and as low as minus five degrees in the Bavarian Forest.
