Alert Issued Regarding Phishing Emails Targeting Tax Information

Fri 2nd May, 2025

The Federal Network Agency has issued a warning regarding phishing emails that are circulating among recipients. In these fraudulent emails, individuals are deceptively instructed to update their IBAN details via a provided link, purporting to be from the Federal Central Tax Office. The sender of these emails is falsely identified as 'Bundesnetzagentur Mainz'.

To help the public identify these phishing attempts, the Federal Network Agency has outlined the following characteristics:

  • The sender's email address appears as info@bundesnetzagentur.org, which is not authentic.
  • The subject line typically reads: "Important Notification: Update Your IBAN for Smooth Tax Refunds".
  • The email claims that a transition has occurred to a "new and advanced platform to enhance services".
  • Recipients are urged to update their IBAN promptly.

The email address is designed to resemble the official contact address of the Federal Network Agency, which is info@bnetza.de. All claims made in the email are false, and the linked portal is not affiliated with either the Federal Network Agency or the Federal Central Tax Office. The agency emphasizes the importance of not sharing personal information in response to such communications.

The Federal Network Agency advises recipients to delete these emails unread and to disregard any requests to click on links or contact support. It also urges individuals to inform their family, friends, and acquaintances about these fraudulent practices.

This warning comes in light of a broader trend, as the Apobank recently alerted its customers to phishing attempts via postal mail and phone. Customers received letters regarding a supposed change to the bank's security procedures.

In addition, the German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV) has also warned against deceptive emails and letters that falsely charge for a non-existent digital prevention module requiring mandatory participation, which has impacted pharmacies as well.

Online security remains a critical issue within pharmacies, especially concerning the protection of business data. Recently, the Apothekerverband Westfalen-Lippe conducted a conference to discuss effective strategies for safeguarding against cyberattacks.
