US and Russia Discuss Diplomatic Operations of Their Embassies

Thu 27th Feb, 2025

In a significant move towards re-establishing diplomatic relations, the United States and Russia are engaging in discussions regarding the normalization of operations at their respective embassies. This dialogue follows years of strained relations between the two nuclear powers, particularly since Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014, which has resulted in a series of diplomatic disputes.

Recent meetings took place in Istanbul, where diplomats from both countries convened at the residence of the US Consul General. According to reports from the Russian state news agency Tass, the talks focused on the operational aspects of their embassies rather than the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, as clarified by the US State Department.

The strained relationship between the US and Russia has led to a series of retaliatory measures, including the expulsion of diplomats, the closure of consulates, and the confiscation of embassy property. These actions have severely hampered the ability of both nations to maintain effective diplomatic engagement.

In December 2016, the US government expelled 35 Russian diplomats as a response to alleged Russian interference in the US electoral process. This was followed in 2017 by actions from Russian President Vladimir Putin, who ordered the reduction of US diplomatic staff in Russia by 755 personnel. Further tensions arose in 2018 when the US closed the Russian consulate in Seattle and expelled 60 diplomats in retaliation for the poisoning of former Russian agent Sergei Skripal in the UK. Russia responded with similar expulsions of US diplomats.

In the years since, diplomatic relations have continued to deteriorate, particularly in light of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which has seen further expulsions of Russian diplomats from the US in 2022 and 2023. The recent discussions signal an effort to address these longstanding issues and potentially pave the way for improved communication and cooperation between the two nations.

The outcome of these discussions remains to be seen, but the willingness of both sides to engage in dialogue could indicate a shift towards a more constructive relationship in the future.
