US-China Trade Talks Resume in Spain Amid Ongoing Tariff Dispute

In a bid to address the persistent tariff conflict, the United States and China are set to resume negotiations in Madrid next week. According to a statement from the US Treasury Department, Scott Bessent, the head of the US delegation, will engage with Chinese representatives, including Vice Premier He Lifeng, who has previously been involved in discussions between the two nations.

He Lifeng is scheduled to lead a delegation to Spain from September 14 to 17. The upcoming talks will focus on critical issues surrounding the economy, trade, and national security, along with discussions regarding the popular social media application, TikTok.

While the exact timing of the talks has not been disclosed, Bessent's itinerary includes travel to both Spain and the United Kingdom from September 12 to 18. Multiple media sources have indicated that the discussions are anticipated to take place next week.

Previously, the two largest economies in the world had extended the pause on their tariff dispute by an additional 90 days. The Madrid meetings will mark the fourth round of negotiations following earlier discussions held in Geneva, London, and Stockholm.

One significant point of contention is the potential sale of TikTok in the United States. A deadline set by former President Trump for reaching a deal regarding the sale of the app is approaching, with the cutoff date being September 17. Concerns have been raised in the US about TikTok's ownership by the Chinese company ByteDance, with fears that the Chinese government could access data on American users and manipulate public opinion through the platform. TikTok has consistently denied these allegations.
