Ukraine expresses dissatisfaction over lack of U.S. intelligence warning

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has criticised the lack of advanced intelligence warnings from the United States ahead of recent Russian attacks, claiming that their absence left the country vulnerable to surprise military strikes. Zelensky stated that Ukraine's detection systems registered incoming Russian missiles only when they were approaching Kyiv, resulting in insufficient time to prepare defenses.

The Russian military has continued to target Ukraine's energy infrastructure, with Kyiv suffering attacks on all three of its heating power plants. Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi reported through Telegram that these attacks left five dead, according to Kyiv police, and added strain to an already fragile power system, leaving about 600,000 residents without electricity. Additional attacks in the Dnipropetrovsk region were reported, resulting in two more deaths.

The Ukrainian reliance on Western intelligence, particularly from the United States, has been critical in their defense operations against Russia. However, recent claims suggest a shortfall in assistance, with an unnamed government official alleging to AFP that the U.S. failed to notify Ukraine about the launch of Russian missiles twice during recent attacks.

Compounding these challenges, technology advisor to Ukraine's Defense Ministry, Serhii Beskrestnov, indicated that disruptions in the service of Starlink, a U.S.-based satellite communications system, hindered Ukrainian military responses. Beskrestnov noted that efficient access to this system is crucial for countering new Shahed drones, stressing the importance of maintaining consistent communication channels.

Despite the allegations of unnotified missile launches, a U.S. government representative dismissed suggestions that there has been a shift in Washington's intelligence-sharing stance towards Ukraine. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, speaking in Estonia, affirmed that U.S. President Donald Trump had reassured allies about continued information exchanges, further urging NATO members to enhance support for Ukraine's defense systems.

The attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure by Russian forces appear to remain relentless, bringing significant challenges to the country's recovery and defense efforts. These infrastructure strikes highlight both the necessity of effective early warning systems and the ongoing dependency on Western tactical support.
