On St. Patrick's Day, U.S. President Donald Trump welcomed the controversial Irish mixed martial artist Conor McGregor to the White House. McGregor, a prominent figure in the MMA world, met with Trump and National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, speaking to reporters in the press room of the executive mansion.
St. Patrick's Day is celebrated to honor Ireland's patron saint, and Irish immigrants brought this tradition to the United States. In the lead-up to the holiday, Trump had previously hosted Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin at the White House. The presence of McGregor at the event added a contentious element, with the Irish government distancing itself from the fighter.
McGregor, who has garnered significant fame in the combat sports arena, has faced legal issues, including a court ruling in Dublin that ordered him to pay EUR250,000 in damages to a woman who accused him of rape. The allegations involve claims that McGregor assaulted her in a hotel room in December 2018. He maintains that the encounter was consensual and has indicated plans to appeal the ruling.
It is noteworthy that Trump himself has faced legal challenges related to sexual misconduct allegations. A New York jury found him liable for sexually assaulting author E. Jean Carroll in 1996, resulting in a damages award. Trump has denied these allegations and has also filed an appeal.
During his visit to Washington, McGregor criticized the Irish government's migration policies, suggesting that Ireland is at risk of losing its cultural identity. In response, Prime Minister Martin stated that McGregor's comments did not reflect the spirit of St. Patrick's Day, which is about community and friendship. Deputy Prime Minister Simon Harris emphasized that while Trump has the right to invite whom he chooses to the White House, McGregor does not represent Ireland or its people.
