Truck Driver Loses Control on A8 Near Pirmasens Due to Drowsiness

Sun 31st Aug, 2025

On the evening of August 30, 2025, a significant incident occurred on the A8 highway near Pirmasens when a truck driver lost control of his vehicle. The 48-year-old driver was operating a semi-trailer truck heading toward Pirmasens when he reportedly experienced a moment of drowsiness, commonly referred to as 'seconds of sleep.'

As the truck approached the exit for Pirmasens-Winzeln around 10 PM, the driver veered off the road, leading the vehicle to tip over and come to rest on its side in the adjacent green strip. Fortunately, the driver emerged from the incident unscathed, but the truck suffered extensive damage, resulting in a total loss.

The local fire department from Zweibrücken responded promptly to the situation, deploying a large team to manage the recovery operation. The process of uprightening the truck and clearing the road took several hours, extending into the early morning of the following day.

As a safety measure, the exit leading to the L600 road was temporarily closed, and traffic was redirected via the B10 to mitigate congestion and ensure the safety of other motorists on the highway.

This incident highlights the risks associated with drowsy driving, which can lead to severe accidents. Authorities continue to emphasize the importance of regular breaks and maintaining alertness while driving, especially for long-haul truck drivers who may face fatigue on lengthy journeys.
