Trial Begins Against Muhammed A. for Attempted Murder of MMA Fighter Hatef Moeil

Köln, Germany - Nearly a decade after the shooting incident, the trial of Muhammed A. has commenced in the Cologne District Court. The case revolves around the attempted murder of MMA fighter Hatef Moeil, who was shot multiple times outside a nightclub in 2015.

Hatef Moeil, now 38, was targeted by Muhammed A., 35, who has been charged with attempted murder. The prosecutor alleges that on the night of November 8, 2015, Moeil was picking up his then-girlfriend when the assailant approached his vehicle and demanded that he exit. When Moeil remained inside the car, Muhammed A. allegedly fired through the driver's side window, striking Moeil in the arm and chest.

According to the indictment, after the initial shot, the defendant forcibly opened the car door and continued to shoot at Moeil three more times. The MMA fighter managed to escape by starting his car and speeding away towards the nightclub entrance, which prompted Muhammed A. to cease firing.

Reports indicate that the motive for the shooting may stem from a prior altercation that occurred two months before the incident. At that time, Moeil, who worked as a bouncer at the nightclub, had allegedly denied Muhammed A. entry. On the night of the shooting, the two men reportedly crossed paths again, leading to another confrontation where Moeil struck Muhammed A., who then left to retrieve a firearm.

Following the shooting, police apprehended Muhammed A. but released him due to insufficient evidence. Further investigations continued for two years, and delays in court proceedings, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and a lengthy separate trial involving a high-profile kidnapping case, postponed the start of this trial until now.

During the opening day of the trial, the defendant's attorney requested the case be dismissed, citing the extensive delays in prosecution. However, the court rejected this motion, and proceedings are expected to continue through the end of November.

Moeil is widely recognized as one of Germany's prominent MMA fighters, and this case has drawn significant attention due to the nature of the crime and the extended time taken to bring it to trial.
