Train Derails Following Landslide: Investigation Underway

Mon 28th Jul, 2025

A train derailed in Riedlingen, southeastern Baden-Württemberg, after heavy rainfall triggered a landslide that caused significant damage and loss of life. The incident occurred on a Sunday evening, resulting in three fatalities, including the train's 32-year-old engineer, a 36-year-old train apprentice, and a 70-year-old passenger. Additionally, 41 individuals sustained injuries, some of which are serious, and are currently receiving treatment in local hospitals.

Witnesses described a scene of chaos and devastation, with railway carriages twisted and piled upon one another. A local farmer, one of the first responders, recounted the sound of the accident, which he described as reminiscent of a war zone. Emergency services arrived swiftly to assist and began clearing the area of debris, including uprooted trees.

Authorities, including Federal Minister of Transport Patrick Schnieder, expressed their shock and sorrow over the tragedy. They highlighted the severe impact of the landslide, which was reportedly exacerbated by an overflowing sewage drain caused by the intense rainfall. According to meteorological reports, the region experienced extreme weather conditions, with precipitation levels reaching up to 50 liters per square meter within an hour.

In response to the incident, the CEO of the railway company expressed deep regret, stating that the images from the scene were profoundly disturbing. Political leaders from the region have also expressed their condolences to the families of the victims and praised the quick response of the emergency services.

A geological assessment is underway to determine the full extent of the damage and the cause of the landslide. Investigators have retrieved the train's black box, which will provide crucial data regarding the train's speed and operations at the time of the incident.

The railway line has been closed as recovery operations commence, with a specialized crane deployed to assist in the removal of the wreckage. Authorities have not yet confirmed when the line will reopen, but alternative bus services are being provided for affected travelers.

This incident follows a similar derailment in June 2024, where two carriages of an ICE train derailed due to a landslide, although no injuries were reported at that time. The current situation highlights ongoing concerns regarding infrastructure safety in the face of increasingly severe weather events.
