A devastating incident occurred on one of the most beautiful hiking trails in northern Spain, resulting in the death of a 29-year-old German tourist. The unfortunate event took place on the Rute del Cares, renowned for its stunning gorges, located within the Picos de Europa National Park in Asturias.

On Tuesday, while descending from the area known as Las Colladinas, the woman was struck by a boulder that dislodged from the rocky cliff above. The impact caused her to lose her footing and fall approximately 50 meters into a ravine that leads to the Cares River.

Fortunately, two fellow hikers and a national park ranger were nearby and managed to reach her before she could fall further into the ravine. They worked quickly to stabilize her position while emergency services were alerted. A helicopter rescue team was dispatched to the scene, including a paramedic and a firefighter who were lowered by rope to assist the injured woman.

Despite the prompt response from the rescue team, who worked diligently to help her, the woman had lost consciousness during the fall. She was airlifted to a hospital in Oviedo, where medical staff fought to save her life. Tragically, she succumbed to her injuries the following day.

This incident highlights the inherent risks associated with hiking in mountainous regions, where natural hazards such as falling rocks can pose significant dangers. Local authorities continue to stress the importance of safety precautions for hikers traversing these popular trails.
