Potsdam - A devastating accident occurred on the B2 road towards Schwedt (Uckermark) near Geesow, resulting in the tragic deaths of two children. The wreckage of an Opel Astra was found crashed against a cherry tree, identified as tree number 28. The vehicle, driven by a 37-year-old mother of three, veered off the road and collided with the tree without braking.
The impact was catastrophic, crushing the front of the car and wrapping it around the tree trunk. The family, who were refugees from Ukraine, became trapped inside the vehicle. Unfortunately, both the infant and the 13-year-old son of the mother succumbed to their injuries at the scene of the accident. The mother and their four-year-old daughter were taken to nearby hospitals with serious injuries.
According to police spokesperson Roland Kamenz, the details surrounding the accident are still under investigation. A forensic expert has been tasked with examining the scene to determine the cause of the crash. As reported by the 'Märkische Oderzeitung', an attempted overtaking maneuver may have contributed to the incident.
Witnesses indicated that the mother might have been trying to overtake a truck on the straight stretch of road. Upon attempting to return to her lane, she lost control of the vehicle, which drifted to the right before crashing into the tree. Authorities confirmed that a truck driver was present at the accident site.
Evidence at the scene showed tire marks on the grass leading up to the tree, and fresh brake marks from a truck were noted about 60 meters before the crash site. It appears the truck had to brake suddenly, which coincided with the moment the Opel attempted to re-enter its lane, ultimately leading to the fatal collision with the tree.
While the police have stated that there is currently no indication of a collision with another vehicle that could have been a factor in the crash, investigations are ongoing. The local community is mourning the loss of the two young lives, and the incident has raised concerns over road safety and driving practices in the area.
