Severe Traffic Jam Exceeds 20 Kilometers on the Tauern Autobahn

Travelers heading south on the Tauern Autobahn (A10) are facing significant delays this weekend, with traffic jams extending up to 24 kilometers as of Sunday afternoon. This congestion comes on the heels of a record-breaking traffic jam that reached more than 45 kilometers on Saturday, stretching all the way to the German border in Bavaria.

The heavy traffic is attributed to the high volume of vehicles during the Pfingsten holiday, exacerbated by a construction project that has reduced a 14-kilometer stretch between Golling and Werfen to a single lane. This particular section has become a bottleneck, contributing significantly to the delays.

As many families began their return trips after the holiday, the situation on the Tauern Autobahn has continued to worsen. On Saturday, the delays peaked at around five hours, although by the afternoon, conditions began to improve slightly. However, on Sunday morning, traffic was again backed up to Salzburg-Süd, with delays averaging just over three hours.

The anticipated wave of return traffic is expected to peak on Monday, with further congestion likely to develop on Tuesday as holidaymakers continue their journeys home. Observers note that they have never witnessed such extensive delays during the Pfingsten holiday period before.

Travelers are advised to plan their journeys carefully, allowing for extra time to navigate the congested routes, particularly as the holiday weekend draws to a close.
