Traffic Issues Prompt Changes on Newly Opened A100 Autobahn Section

Mon 8th Sep, 2025

The recent inauguration of the 16th segment of the A100 autobahn in Berlin-Treptow has led to significant traffic congestion and chaotic conditions in the area. In response to these challenges, the city's traffic authorities are planning immediate adjustments to improve the situation.

Traffic Senator Ute Bonde acknowledged the difficulties that have arisen since the new stretch of the autobahn was opened. She indicated that the department is actively working on modifications to address the increasing congestion, particularly with the end of the holiday season approaching.

Prior to the opening, simulations were conducted to predict the traffic patterns that would emerge; however, the actual conditions have deviated from those projections. The current traffic flow at the end of the new autobahn section, near Treptower Park and the Elsen Bridge, is under constant observation and assessment.

The recent addition to the A100 has been a subject of contention, having taken over a decade to complete. This segment extends from the Neukölln Triangle to the Treptow exit. Compounding the traffic issues, construction work on the adjacent Elsen Bridge has already strained the area's transportation dynamics even before the autobahn was fully operational.

With the ongoing review and planned interventions, officials aim to alleviate the heavy traffic and enhance safety measures for all road users, including pedestrians. The situation remains fluid as adjustments are formulated and implemented to better manage the flow of vehicles in this crucial area of Berlin.
