Major Traffic Disruption on A2 Due to Oil Spill from Tanker

Sat 28th Jun, 2025

A significant traffic incident occurred on the A2 motorway near Ziesar when a tanker truck transporting cooking oil overturned, spilling its contents across the road. The accident led to a full closure of the highway in both directions, causing extensive delays during the busy holiday travel period.

Traffic was halted between Theeßen and Ziesar for several hours. However, as of midday, vehicles began to move again towards Hannover. Authorities have reported that the section of the motorway heading towards Berlin will remain closed until at least the evening due to clean-up operations.

The driver of the truck sustained minor injuries as a result of the accident, which took place southwest of Brandenburg an der Havel, close to the state border with Saxony-Anhalt. Police indicated that the road needed to be thoroughly cleaned and that the overturned vehicle required recovery.

According to officials, the oil spread across all six lanes of the motorway, raising concerns about potential environmental hazards, though specific risks have yet to be confirmed. In response to the closure, traffic has been redirected, leading to significant congestion in the surrounding regions.

As the summer holiday season has commenced in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia, the timing of this incident has exacerbated traffic conditions, resulting in long tailbacks. Authorities are working diligently to resolve the situation and restore normal traffic flow.
