Concerns Over Traffic Congestion with Reduced Lanes on A100 Bridge in Berlin

Fri 4th Apr, 2025

The Berlin SPD party has expressed concerns regarding the proposal to reduce the number of lanes on the new A100 bridge. The A100 is one of Germany's busiest highways, with significant traffic flow, particularly at the Funkturm interchange, which accommodates approximately 230,000 vehicles daily. The existing bridge, which has been closed due to safety issues, previously supported around 95,000 vehicles each day.

The environmental organization BUND has advocated for a streamlined design of the new bridge, suggesting the removal of at least one lane in each direction. This proposal has raised alarm among local officials, including Tino Schopf, the SPD's transport spokesperson, who expressed the view that funneling traffic onto a narrower bridge could exacerbate congestion and increase the risk of accidents.

Schopf emphasized the need for an investment shift towards enhancing public transportation and rail systems, asserting that future traffic solutions should not rely solely on road infrastructure. He pointed out the pressing need for a sustainable approach to urban transport, reflecting a broader trend towards prioritizing public transit options over car dependency.

Recent inspections revealed a significant crack in the structure of the existing bridge, leading to its abrupt closure in mid-March. This prompted additional precautions, including the suspension of the S-Bahn service running below the bridge. The bridge is slated for demolition later this month, with plans for a replacement structure that will be designed to accommodate future traffic demands.

As discussions continue, the SPD maintains that any reconstruction must consider the high volume of commuters and the potential for increased traffic bottlenecks. The party advocates for a balanced approach that integrates both road and public transport solutions to address the pressing transportation needs of Berlin.
