Tourist Stranded After Following GPS Over Mountain Pass

In a bizarre incident in Bavaria, a 47-year-old tourist from Hesse found herself stranded while driving from Schleching to Aschau, following the directions of her GPS device. The woman, unfamiliar with the Chiemgau region, entered her destination into the navigation system, which unexpectedly directed her over the steep and rugged Kampenwand mountain, standing at 1,669 meters.

After approximately five kilometers on a forest road, the car became immobilized due to the challenging terrain. Unable to proceed or reverse, she and her three passengers initiated a distress call for assistance. The police from Traunstein reported that the navigation device had led them on a perilous route, attempting to guide them over the summit of the Kampenwand to reach Aschau.

Authorities responded promptly, coordinating a safe return for the stranded group. They were guided back to Schleching, allowing them to continue their journey on a proper road, which bypassed the mountain altogether. The incident serves as a reminder of the potential pitfalls of relying solely on technology for navigation, particularly in unfamiliar and rugged landscapes.
