Low Water Levels in the Rhine Force Thyssenkrupp to Adjust Shipping Practices

Wed 9th Apr, 2025

Industrial giants are adapting to the challenges posed by low water levels in the Rhine River, particularly affecting shipping capacities. Thyssenkrupp, a leading steel manufacturer, has announced a reduction in the load capacity of its vessels. The company typically requires approximately 60,000 tons of raw materials daily, including iron ore and coal, which are predominantly transported via ship.

In response to the diminishing water levels, Thyssenkrupp has opted to load its ships with lesser quantities of cargo to decrease the draft, thereby increasing the frequency of voyages. At present, the firm reports no disruptions in raw material supply. However, the strategic shift aims to ensure continuous operations despite the prevailing conditions.

Similarly, Covestro, a prominent plastics manufacturer, is implementing additional measures to maintain production levels amid these challenges. The firm has increased the number of vessels utilized and is ramping up the frequency of shipments. Furthermore, they are building inventories for raw materials while depleting stocks of finished and intermediate products.

The RWI-Leibniz Institute for Economic Research has issued a warning regarding the implications of low water levels on economic growth. Researcher Manuel Frondel emphasizes the need to allocate resources from the infrastructure fund to deepen the Rhine to mitigate these risks. The ongoing situation underscores the urgency for structural solutions to safeguard the logistics and transportation sectors reliant on the river.
