During a recent conference of eastern German state leaders, Mario Voigt, the Minister President of Thüringen, emphasized the necessity for the incoming federal government to leverage the experiences gained in East Germany to combat the ongoing economic downturn. He articulated the need for a renewed momentum in Germany, advocating for lower taxes, reduced bureaucracy, and a pronounced focus on support and accountability.

Voigt highlighted that the last 35 years have provided substantial insights from the transformation and changes experienced in the region, which could be instrumental in shaping effective policies. His comments were made at a gathering that included various economic representatives, underscoring the collaborative effort to address regional and national economic challenges.

Ralf-Uwe Bauer, the President of the Chamber of Commerce in East Thüringen, echoed Voigt's sentiments, pointing out the significant economic progress that has been achieved in East Germany over the past three decades. He noted the innovative capabilities of eastern German enterprises, but also stressed the pressing need for political solutions to mandatory tasks such as reducing bureaucracy, addressing energy concerns, and managing labor costs.

Bauer remarked on the current coalition negotiations between the Union and the SPD, expressing that while the documents reviewed so far appear satisfactory, numerous questions remain unresolved. He called for a more robust approach to ensure that the unique challenges faced by eastern states are adequately addressed in the broader context of national policy-making.

The discussions at the conference reflect a growing consensus among eastern leaders for a stronger voice in federal politics, especially in the context of economic recovery and growth. With an acknowledgment of the distinct historical and socio-economic landscape of East Germany, these leaders are advocating for policies that not only recognize their past but also utilize it as a foundation for future development.
