Investigations Launched Against Thüringen BSW Leaders for Alleged Corruption

Thu 23rd Jan, 2025
The Public Prosecutor's Office in Erfurt has confirmed that it is conducting corruption investigations involving two prominent politicians from Thüringen, Katja Wolf and Steffen Schütz, who are affiliated with the BSW party. The investigation was prompted by an anonymous tip-off and has led to proceedings against both the state's finance minister and infrastructure minister, as authorities are examining suspicions related to the acceptance and granting of benefits. The focus of the inquiry is on a shared trip abroad that took place from December 29, 2023, to January 2, 2024. Reports indicate that the investigation centers around a stay at Schütz's property in Mallorca, where Wolf, who was serving as the mayor of Eisenach at the time, was present. Schütz's marketing company played a role in Eisenach's bid to host a future center for German unity and European transformation, although the contract ultimately went to Halle. Both politicians have publicly stated that they are unaware of the specifics of the allegations but are prepared to address the accusations vigorously and transparently once they have more information. They also expressed their consent to waive their parliamentary immunity to facilitate the legal process. As the BSW party aims to make a significant impact in the upcoming federal elections scheduled for next month, they have faced a decline in public support since October. Polling data shows that while their approval ratings hovered around 8 percent during the summer, they have recently dipped to just above the critical 5 percent threshold, currently standing at 5.2 percent. The Thüringen State Parliament's Justice Committee lifted the immunity of both members on Wednesday, allowing the prosecution to proceed with its investigations. Wolf and Schütz have been part of the state government since December, holding leadership positions within their party. These developments come at a crucial time for the BSW, which is hoping to secure its first representation in the Bundestag. As the party navigates this political scandal, the implications for their electoral prospects remain to be seen.
