Thousands Expected as 'Querdenken' Movement Protests at Brandenburg Gate

Sat 2nd Aug, 2025

In Berlin, members of the 'Querdenken' movement gathered at the iconic Brandenburg Gate on Saturday afternoon, with police estimating that the number of participants could reach several thousand. This demonstration is themed 'Peace and Freedom' and features a planned procession through Berlin's historical center.

The demonstrators, carrying flags depicting peace doves alongside the German and Palestinian flags, are led by notable figures from the movement, including dramaturg Anselm Lenz. The police have been monitoring the situation closely as they anticipate a significant turnout throughout the afternoon.

Simultaneously, several counter-protests have been organized. Around midday, approximately 500 participants began marching from the Neptune Fountain near the Red Town Hall towards Potsdamer Platz, voicing opposition to what they termed 'right-wing propaganda.'

The 'Querdenken' movement rose to prominence during the COVID-19 pandemic, primarily through large-scale protests against government measures aimed at curbing the spread of the virus. This group comprises a diverse array of individuals, including vaccine skeptics, conspiracy theorists, and right-wing activists.

The presence of Michael Ballweg, the founder of 'Querdenken,' at the Berlin demonstration remains uncertain, as he recently concluded a fraud trial in Stuttgart, where he was acquitted of several charges.
