Thailand and Cambodia have enacted a ceasefire following a resurgence of border hostilities that led to significant casualties and displacement. Both nations' defense ministries released a joint statement confirming the cessation of all military actions, effective from midday local time on December 27, 2025.
The agreement arrived after a period of escalated tension along the 817-kilometer shared border. Recent clashes had resulted in at least 101 fatalities and forced over half a million people from their homes, affecting communities on both sides of the frontier. The ceasefire mandates an immediate halt to all forms of military engagement, explicitly prohibiting attacks on civilian populations, infrastructure, and military targets.
Under the terms of the ceasefire, the current deployment of troops will remain unchanged, with no further movement or reinforcement permitted. Both governments have acknowledged that any additional military activity could risk reigniting conflict and undermine ongoing peace efforts. The agreement grants residents displaced by the fighting the opportunity to return to their communities, aiming to restore stability and normalcy in the affected border areas.
This latest ceasefire marks the conclusion of 20 days of renewed violence, which followed an earlier period of conflict in July. At that time, international mediation, involving the United States, China, and Malaysia, had resulted in a temporary truce. However, the situation deteriorated again in early December, with both countries accusing each other of breaching previous agreements.
The underlying dispute centers on unresolved border demarcation issues dating back to colonial-era treaties and the contested ownership of ancient temple sites situated near the border. These long-standing disagreements have periodically triggered confrontations, with both sides citing violations and denials regarding attacks on civilians and military positions.
Efforts to secure a lasting resolution are ongoing. In addition to the ceasefire, the Cambodian foreign ministry has announced that officials from Cambodia, Thailand, and China will convene for trilateral discussions in China's Yunnan Province. These two-day talks are intended to address recent developments and explore avenues for a sustainable diplomatic solution to the border dispute.
The situation remains under close observation by international actors, as regional stability and the humanitarian impact of the conflict continue to be of concern. Both Thailand and Cambodia have expressed commitment to upholding the ceasefire and engaging in dialogue to prevent further escalation.
