The Tesla factory in Grünheide, Brandenburg, is at the center of a growing controversy regarding employee rights, particularly surrounding wage payments during illness. Recent discussions have highlighted the absence of wage continuation for sick employees, prompting the IG Metall union to question the works council's commitment to representing staff interests. A request for transparency regarding the number of sick employees who have not received their salaries was reportedly dismissed by the management, despite a majority of the works council members being in favor of seeking this information.
According to the works director, the concern pertains to a small fraction of the workforce, with claims that only about 0.1% of employees face scrutiny regarding the legitimacy of their sick leave. These cases require employees to demonstrate that they are entitled to continued payment; failure to do so results in the cessation of their salary.
The works council, led by Nadine Schmitz, faces criticism for its perceived closeness to management, with allegations that it is obstructing employee representation. The IG Metall union accuses the council of prioritizing management interests over those of the workers, an assertion that has not been addressed directly by Schmitz.
Furthermore, the factory has previously experienced a high rate of employee absenteeism, which peaked at 17% in August 2024. In response, management initiated unannounced visits to employees on sick leave, a tactic that drew mixed reactions. Although management claims this approach has successfully reduced absenteeism to around 9%, reports suggest that some employees have faced financial penalties or demands to repay wages they received while on sick leave.
The ongoing debate has broader implications, as it raises questions about employee rights and employer expectations across Germany. The IG Metall union has expressed concerns that Tesla's practices could set a dangerous precedent for other companies, particularly regarding demands for medical disclosures and the waiver of doctor-patient confidentiality.
Despite these challenges, there have been some signs of progress. Following a tumultuous meeting in March, the works council agreed to engage with management over the issue of paid breaks, a motion supported by over 3,000 signatures from employees. However, management remains resistant, citing that paid breaks would amount to a reduction in work hours.
Overall, the Grünheide facility remains a focal point of labor relations in the automotive industry, with over 11,000 employees and operations extending to 37 markets. The outcome of these labor disputes could significantly affect the working conditions and rights of employees not just at Tesla but potentially across the industry.
