Syrian Government Forces Reportedly Push Back Jihadists
Syrian government forces, loyal to President Bashar al-Assad, have claimed success in preventing jihadist groups from advancing into regions north of Hama. A commander aligned with the government described the military's recent operations as a counteroffensive, during which they reportedly regained control of the town of Chanasir, situated approximately 80 kilometers southeast of Aleppo, which had recently fallen to jihadist fighters.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, intense clashes have erupted between government troops and jihadists in the northern areas of Hama. Rami Abdel-Rahman, the head of the Observatory, noted that Russian aircraft and Iranian-backed militias are providing support to the Syrian army. Reports indicate that more than 45 airstrikes have been conducted, utilizing barrel bombs against rebel positions, allowing government forces to successfully repel advances from the insurgents.
Earlier last week, fighters from the Islamist group Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) initiated an offensive in northwestern Syria, seizing control of Aleppo. Hama is located around 130 kilometers south of Aleppo. The government forces, alongside their allies, are reportedly moving toward the city of Safira, which lies 25 kilometers outside of Aleppo and is considered a gateway to the country's second-largest city.
Meanwhile, the so-called Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), predominantly led by Kurdish militias, are reportedly attempting to capture areas in the northeast that remain under government control. This has led to confrontations in Dair as-Saur, where government troops and their allies are engaged in fights against SDF-affiliated militias.
In a separate development, coalition aircraft from the United States have targeted positions held by Iranian-aligned militias in Dair as-Saur. This air campaign is part of the broader efforts by the international coalition formed against Islamic State, which was established in 2014 by a coalition of Western and Arab nations. Although the United States has withdrawn the majority of its ground troops from Syria, it continues to play a role in the ongoing conflict against jihadist factions.
The situation in Syria remains complex, with various factions vying for control over strategic territories amid the ongoing civil conflict. The dynamics on the ground continue to evolve, as government forces and allied militias seek to consolidate their power while facing challenges from both local insurgents and external actors.
