Authorities have apprehended a suspect in connection with an attack that left five individuals injured in Bielefeld, Germany. The incident occurred early on Sunday morning when a man allegedly assaulted the victims with a sharp object while they were gathered outside a bar in the city's northwest area.

According to police reports, the victims, aged between 22 and 27, were celebrating and belong to the local football community. In an act of self-defense, the victims reportedly fought back, resulting in injuries to the assailant, who then fled the scene. The attack took place near the Bielefeld train station, under a highway.

On Monday evening, a special operations team conducted raids in Heiligenhaus, near Düsseldorf, which led to the arrest of a 35-year-old man, identified as a Syrian national residing in Harsewinkel. Authorities stated that there is a high probability that he is the primary suspect in the assault.

During the investigation at the crime scene, police recovered several knives and a bag containing personal documents belonging to the suspect, as well as a bottle filled with a substance that emitted a gasoline-like odor. The exact weapon used in the attack is still under investigation.

Authorities are working to ascertain the suspect's motives. Herbert Reul, the Interior Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, indicated that while they are aware of the suspect's identity and background, a full understanding of the motivations behind the attack will require further investigation and communication with the suspect.

The suspect reportedly entered Europe through Turkey and was granted temporary protection status in December 2023 after applying for asylum in Germany. The police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack and the suspect's prior history.
