Surge in 'Deaths of Despair' in the U.S. Over Two Decades

Recent research indicates a significant escalation in 'deaths of despair' in the United States, with rates more than doubling over a span of two decades. These deaths, classified as fatalities resulting from suicide, drug overdoses, and alcohol-related illnesses, highlight a critical public health issue.

The study, conducted by experts at Florida Atlantic University, examined trends in deaths of despair among individuals aged 25 to 74 between 1999 and 2021. It utilized the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) to categorize various underlying causes of these deaths, totaling 19 distinct categories. These included chronic liver diseases, suicides, and different forms of poisoning, among others.

According to the findings published in the journal Advances in Preventive Medicine and Health Care, the annual rate of deaths of despair has surged two and a half times over the examined period. By 2021, these deaths accounted for 176,386 fatalities, making them the fifth leading cause of death in the U.S., following heart disease, cancer, COVID-19, and accidents.

Panagiota Kitsantas, a senior researcher at the university, emphasized the importance of addressing both the clinical and socioeconomic factors contributing to this crisis. She urged for the integration of mental health and substance use services into primary care settings to reduce stigma and improve access to care.

The study utilized data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and indicated that as of 2022, the rates of deaths of despair were notably higher among Black individuals compared to white individuals, with the highest rates observed among American Indian or Alaska Native populations.

Maria Carmenza Mejia, the lead author of the study, stated that addressing the rise in deaths of despair requires a comprehensive strategy incorporating medical, social, and economic interventions. She highlighted the necessity for further research to understand the risk factors associated with these deaths and advocated for evidence-based policies aimed at reducing their prevalence.
