Berlin has witnessed a notable increase in business startups, particularly in the commercial sector, according to the latest data from the Institute for SME Research Bonn (IfM). In 2024, the capital registered a total of 34,870 new businesses, marking a rise of 1,950 compared to the previous year. However, this figure remains below the levels recorded in 2019, prior to the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The majority of these new enterprises emerged in the commercial domain, while the freelance sector also saw significant activity. Interestingly, there were only ten new startups in the agricultural and forestry sectors.
When comparing startup intensity across Germany's states, Berlin and Hamburg stand out. This metric, which represents the number of new businesses per 10,000 residents aged between 18 and 65, places Berlin at the forefront with a rate of 143.2, followed closely by Hamburg at 126.8. In contrast, Bremen, Germany's smallest state, has startup levels comparable to those of larger federal states.
The IfM notes a broader national trend in which the structure of new business formations has shifted towards commercial activities over the past year. Economists suggest that this shift may be a reaction to ongoing economic uncertainty. Historically, such patterns have emerged during periods of economic weakness, prompting individuals to explore self-employment as a viable alternative.
This trend reflects a changing landscape for entrepreneurship in Berlin, where aspiring business owners are increasingly seeking opportunities in the commercial sector. The rise in new startups could be indicative of a larger movement towards self-employment as individuals adapt to the current economic climate.
Furthermore, the Berlin government has been actively promoting entrepreneurship through various initiatives aimed at supporting new businesses. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to stimulate economic growth and innovation, which is particularly crucial in the wake of the pandemic.
With the increase in business startups, Berlin is positioning itself as a vibrant hub for entrepreneurship, attracting a diverse range of industries and fostering a dynamic economic environment.
