Triple-header of hockey, basketball and volleyball
Munich, January 16 - After an unspectacular and a stinky Saturday on the football pitch for the local clubs, let's hope the teams in action today can salvage the weekend. Here's your preview of the action, a wrap up of all the action coming Monday morning.
EHC hockey look to sweep in Dusseldorf
Under the Friday night lights, EHC München jumped all over the DEG Metro Stars often and early, winning 6-1 at the Eissportzentrum. Eric Schneider and Martin Schymainski each scored 2 goals in the rout. This afternoon, the Metro Stars hope to return the favor as they host EHC at the ISS Dome. Munich are four points behind Dusseldorf in the standings and a win will tighten up the seedings for the playoffs. Face-off is at 14:30.
Haching volleyball eyeing first place
It's time to take notice of Generali Haching. They are near the top of the Volleyball Bundesliga battling for the league title, they have qualified for the knockout stage of the Champions League, and will play their main rival in the German Cup final in March. More on this team and the recent success later, but don't wait on us to catch the action at the Generali Sport Arena. A win this afternoon against CV Mitteldeutschland will allow Haching to keep up with league leaders Friedrichshafen who won last night. Action served up starting at 16:00.
Bayern Basketball travel to Heidelberg
The second half of the season officially begins for Dirk Bauermann's club as they will play teams that they put a beat down on in the fall, starting tonight against USC Heidelberg. Jonathan Wallace scored 23 points as Bayern crushed Heidelberg 97-69 on opening night back on September 29th and began a dominating run through the first half of the season. Bayern won matches by an average of 20 points.
If the team is vulnerable, it's on the road, they suffered their only loss of the season so far away from 'Munich Square Garden'. Last week in Freiburg, Bayern only won by 7 points. USC and it's fans have been looking forward to this match and Bayern will have to overcome both the revenge factor and the hostile road conditions, every week. Tip-off is at 17:00 this evening.
