The results were telling: individuals with disabilities expressed feeling less valued and respected during their healthcare encounters. Notably, those with sensory impairments--such as vision and hearing disabilities--as well as cognitive limitations reported a distinct lack of easily understandable information from their providers.
The findings underscore an alarming trend wherein patients with disabilities consistently report feeling disrespected and unheard. For example, those with psychological conditions, vision impairments, and hearing disabilities frequently described their experiences as lacking cultural responsiveness across various metrics. This has prompted researchers to call for a broader understanding of culturally responsive care that includes the needs of individuals with disabilities that may not be immediately obvious.
This research aligns with previous evidence highlighting detrimental perceptions held by some healthcare providers toward disabled individuals, emphasizing the urgency for further studies investigating the impact of these negative experiences on health outcomes.
