Ongoing Hostage Crisis: Status of Remaining Hamas Captives

Wed 12th Feb, 2025

As of now, 76 individuals, including ten with German citizenship, remain hostages of Hamas following their abduction on October 7, 2023. Reports indicate that at least one of the German hostages is enduring severe mistreatment.

Recently, two hostages, Arbel Yehoud and Gadi Moses, were released after spending 482 days in captivity. The pair, who are descendants of Holocaust survivors, were abducted from their home in Kibbutz Nir Oz during a violent raid. Their release has brought a mix of relief and concern, as many others, including family and friends, are still in the hands of their captors.

The abduction on October 7, 2023, has had devastating effects on many families. Yehoud's life was shattered when her brother was killed during the attack, and her partner, Ariel Cunio, remains unaccounted for. Reports have surfaced indicating that a total of 36 hostages have been confirmed dead, although the actual number may be higher, given the ongoing conflict and the lack of clear communication from Hamas.

In a recent negotiation, a total of 16 hostages have been freed, with expectations that more will follow. It is anticipated that by March 1, 20 additional hostages will be released as part of the ongoing discussions between Hamas and Israeli officials. Furthermore, Thailand has successfully negotiated the release of five of its citizens who were working in Israel at the time of their abduction.

The hostages come from diverse backgrounds, with those still in captivity representing over 20 nationalities. Among them are six individuals with dual German-Israeli citizenship, including Yehoud. The German Foreign Office has refrained from disclosing the names or exact numbers of German hostages, but their plight has drawn significant attention.

One of the most notable cases involves Shiri Silberman-Bibas and her two young sons, Kfir and Ariel. Kfir, who was only nine months old at the time of his abduction, recently marked his second birthday in captivity. The family has become a poignant symbol of the ongoing crisis, with their circumstances highlighted in various demonstrations across Israel and Germany.

Another heart-wrenching case is that of twins Gali and Ziv Berman, who were kidnapped while trying to help a neighbor during the raid. They are believed to have been held separately, which raises concerns among their family and supporters about their current conditions.

In addition to the living hostages, Hamas is reported to be holding the remains of several individuals, including Shay Levinson and Yair Yaakov, who also held German citizenship. The return of these remains is expected to occur in a later phase of negotiations.

The ongoing hostage situation continues to evolve, with families desperately awaiting news of their loved ones. The international community remains watchful, hoping for further resolutions that can bring the remaining captives home safely.
