States Advocate for Stricter Regulations on Medical Cannabis Prescriptions

In light of a significant increase in the online prescription of medical cannabis, health ministers from various German states are pushing for enhanced regulations. They are advocating for changes to the existing Medical Cannabis Act (MedCanG), which would require patients to have in-person consultations with healthcare providers before receiving prescriptions for medical cannabis.

The shift in the legal framework for medical cannabis has led to a surge in online platforms that facilitate the ordering of prescriptions. Patients can now fill out online questionnaires to obtain prescriptions, raising concerns about the integrity and necessity of the prescription process. The Federal Chamber of Pharmacists (BAK) has issued warnings regarding the growing trend of these online prescriptions, emphasizing that the essence of the prescription requirement is being diluted.

The health ministers argue that the current practices undermine the intended purpose of prescription requirements and jeopardize the importance of proper medical assessments. They assert that cannabis should only be prescribed following a thorough in-person evaluation by a qualified physician, ensuring that the treatment aligns with medical indications.

The proposed modifications to the MedCanG aim to safeguard patient health by mandating personal consultations prior to the issuance of prescriptions for medical cannabis.
