A 40-year-old man is currently facing trial at the Berlin District Court for a near-fatal stabbing of his sleeping partner. The prosecution has charged him with attempted murder after the 38-year-old woman reportedly sustained approximately 20 stab and cut wounds. The incident, which occurred late last year, was interrupted by the couple's 14-year-old son, who intervened to prevent further harm.

The attack allegedly took place during the night of December 21-22, 2024, in the family's shared accommodation in Berlin-Moabit, following a domestic dispute. Armed with a kitchen knife, the accused is said to have assaulted his partner with the intent to kill her. Witnesses claim that the woman fought back after the initial stab to her abdomen, which ultimately saved her life.

During the trial, it was revealed that the son, alerted by the commotion, managed to separate his father from the victim and hold him until help arrived. Additionally, the couple's daughter reportedly awoke during the struggle and saw her father brandishing the knife, expressing her fear by stating that he wanted to harm their mother.

The police arrested the suspect at the scene, where he was found with a suitcase. According to a police officer who testified, the accused explained that there had been a dispute and that he had taken the knife from his partner before stabbing her. Remarkably calm during the arrest, he also mentioned cleaning the blood from his hands and returning the knife to its place in the cutlery drawer.

The couple, originally from Iraq, moved to Germany in 2017. At the beginning of the trial, the defendant confirmed his marital status, stating he was awaiting a visit from his partner, who is expected to testify on June 12.

This case underscores the serious issue of domestic violence and the critical role that family members can play in intervening during such incidents. The upcoming testimonies are anticipated to provide further insights into the events leading up to the stabbing.
