Violent Incident at Local Company: One Dead, Two Injured in Stabbing Attack

Tue 1st Jul, 2025

A tragic incident occurred in a company in Unterfranken where a young man allegedly attacked his colleagues with a knife, resulting in the death of one woman and serious injuries to two men. The attack took place at the regional utility provider, Überlandwerk Rhön, located in Mellrichstadt, a small community known for its close-knit atmosphere.

The 21-year-old suspect was apprehended by police at the scene shortly after the attack. Authorities reported that the woman, aged 59, succumbed to her injuries at the site, while the two male victims, aged 55 and 62, were transported to the hospital for urgent medical attention.

Initial reports from the police suggested that there were four victims, but it was later confirmed that three individuals were harmed in total. Other employees managed to subdue the attacker until law enforcement arrived.

The motive behind this violent act remains unclear, and police have secured the weapon believed to have been used in the assault. Investigations are being conducted by the criminal police in collaboration with the public prosecutor's office. The suspect is expected to appear before an investigative judge, who will determine whether he will be placed in custody.

Emergency calls began flooding in around 7:30 AM on Tuesday morning, prompting a swift response from police and medical services. The company's building is situated near the center of Mellrichstadt, which has a population of approximately 5,600 residents. Local police spokesperson Denis Stegner described the community as very familiar, emphasizing the shock this incident has caused.

Mellrichstadt's mayor, Michael Kraus, expressed his devastation over the events, labeling it an absolute catastrophe. Additionally, the district administrator, Thomas Habermann, referred to the incident as a traumatic experience for the entire region, having received the news while traveling in Brussels, which he cut short to return home.

The emotional toll of this attack extends beyond the immediate victims. Many employees who witnessed the event are receiving support from a psychosocial emergency response team, which is assisting around 50 individuals affected by the incident, including emergency responders who were present. The police have established a support center for family members and the public at a nearby hall.

This incident is not isolated, as there have been previous cases of workplace violence in Germany. In February, another incident in Regensburg involved a 55-year-old man fatally attacking a 19-year-old female colleague, while a separate case in Baden-Württemberg saw a man murder two supervisors at a car manufacturing plant.
