SPD demands clarification from CDU over AfD politician's election

Wed 7th Oct, 2026

The Social Democratic Party (SPD) has called on the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) for an explanation following the election of Alternative for Germany (AfD) politician Tobias Rausch as President of the Saxony-Anhalt state parliament. This development has caused tensions within national politics, affecting the SPD’s relationship with its coalition partner, the CDU.

The SPD's dissatisfaction was publicly voiced by its leader Lars Klingbeil, who stated that the election of Rausch, a member of a party assessed to be right-wing extremist, required urgent answers. Klingbeil pointed out that it was concerning how Rausch secured significantly more votes than the AfD's own total, suggesting some level of support from other parties' members. He regards the election as a breach of taboo by having individuals with extreme viewpoints in such high offices.

Following the election, which took place at the inaugural session of the state parliament in Magdeburg, SPD Secretary General Tim Klüssendorf reinforced the demand for clarity from the CDU. Klüssendorf, speaking to a regional publication, expressed his expectation for the CDU to investigate and address the situation promptly.

Rausch was elected with 48 votes, while the combined seats held by the AfD and the 'Bürger für Sachsen-Anhalt' (BSW) total 44. The CDU had recommended abstentions to its 15 members, but notably, only five abstained and one was absent. This implies that votes might have come from CDU members or unexpected sources since the voting was conducted in secret, leaving the contributing parties to Rausch’s victory unclear.

In protest, the SPD held a demonstration at a symbolic location in Berlin, aiming to draw national attention to what they view as a significant political misstep. The controversy over the state parliament's leadership has posed questions about the CDU's internal dynamics and its alignment with its coalition partners.

The leadership of the CDU at the state level has come under scrutiny. Despite recommending abstention, the result suggests internal disagreement or non-compliance among its members. How this situation will affect CDU's future policies and its coalition with the SPD remains to be seen.

The situation is complicated further by the election outcomes for other leadership roles within the parliament. Hans-Thomas Tillschneider, another AfD member, was elected Vice President. Meanwhile, the SPD’s nominee, Armin Willingmann, failed to secure the Vice Presidency after receiving only 33 votes against 48 against him. In contrast, CDU's Carsten Borchert succeeded in his bid for the vice-presidential position.

Overall, the election results reflect a contentious political climate in Saxony-Anhalt, showcasing the delicate balance within the coalition government and perhaps a drift within party lines. The CDU and SPD must now navigate these tensions while addressing the implications of sharing power with a party such as the AfD, known for its controversial stances and policies.

This political scenario in Saxony-Anhalt highlights the broader challenges that coalition governments face in maintaining unity and coherence, especially when dealing with polarizing figures and parties. The SPD's call for clarity aims to safeguard democratic norms and prevent future controversies of a similar nature.

As these dynamics unfold, the pressure is on the CDU to clarify its position and manage the narratives surrounding its alleged involvement in supporting a candidate from a party seen as extreme in its views. Meanwhile, political observers and coalition members await a response that could influence the stability and collaboration within the national government.
