In a startling case from Spandau, a 35-year-old unemployed truck driver has been sentenced to six months in prison, suspended, for the illegal possession of approximately 200 kilograms of fireworks, including prohibited items such as firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices. The police discovered this extensive stash during a search of his apartment, where it was stored unsafely, raising serious safety concerns.
The investigation commenced following a tip-off received by authorities in December 2024, leading to a thorough examination of the individual's living quarters. Among the confiscated items were 14 large firecrackers and 800 bombettes, which are typically used in large-scale fireworks displays. Additionally, the man was found to possess a blank-firing gun without the necessary permits.
During the court proceedings held at the Tiergarten District Court, the accused admitted to purchasing the fireworks for around 500 euros in the Czech Republic. Despite his acknowledgment of wrongdoing, he claimed intentions to obtain a fireworks license before using the pyrotechnics.
During the trial, the presiding judge expressed severe concerns regarding the hazardous nature of the situation. The judge emphasized the potential dangers of having such a significant amount of fireworks stored in a residential area, pointing out the catastrophic consequences that could arise from a simple spark or flame. The judge's remarks highlighted the gravity of the offense, indicating that such negligence could endanger not only the accused but also his family and neighbors.
Legal experts noted that the case underscores the importance of adhering to regulations concerning the storage and use of fireworks, particularly in residential settings. The laws in place aim to ensure public safety and prevent accidents that can arise from improper handling of explosive materials.
Following the verdict, the defendant will be under probation for the duration of his suspended sentence, which serves as a warning to others about the serious repercussions of violating safety laws regarding fireworks.
