Badenweiler-Schweighof - A vehicle was engulfed in flames early Thursday morning after a witness reported seeing a suspicious individual near the scene. The fire on Klemmbachstraße was reported around 6:20 AM, prompting a swift response from local police and fire services. Despite their efforts, the car was completely destroyed by the time the fire was extinguished.
Authorities soon turned their attention to a 60-year-old German man, who had fled the scene with a caravan. An immediate search was initiated, but initial attempts to locate him were unsuccessful.
However, in the early hours of Friday morning, the Basel-Stadt Cantonal Police apprehended the suspect as he attempted to enter Switzerland. He was subsequently handed over to German authorities.
On July 25, 2025, a local court issued a detention order for the individual, who is now being held in a specialized facility. The Freiburg Criminal Police have launched an investigation into the incident, focusing on the charge of arson.
Currently, there is no evidence linking the suspect to additional fires reported in Riegel on the same day, according to police sources.
