As Father's Day approaches, many are eagerly anticipating the celebrations that come with it. However, before the festivities can commence, Germany is bracing itself for significant weather disturbances caused by a weather system referred to as 'Ole'. Meteorologists are issuing warnings about severe thunderstorms expected to impact various regions across the country today.
The German Weather Service (DWD) has forecasted that thunderstorms will begin in the western parts of the country and the northern lowlands during the morning hours, with the most intense activity shifting to central and eastern Germany by midday. By late afternoon and into the evening, the southern regions are also expected to experience severe weather.
According to meteorological experts, 'Ole' will bring heavy rain, strong winds, and the potential for hail. The storms are predicted to produce localized heavy downpours, with rainfall amounts reaching between 15 to 20 liters per square meter in a short period. The DWD does not currently anticipate the likelihood of tornadoes or extreme weather conditions, but caution is advised due to the severity of the storms.
In particular, the Rhine-Main area is expected to face significant rainfall today, with amounts possibly exceeding 40 liters per square meter, accompanied by intense thunderstorms. Additional warnings are issued for North Rhine-Westphalia, Saxony, Thuringia, Saxony-Anhalt, and southeastern Lower Saxony, where stronger thunderstorms may occur later in the day.
As the weather system progresses, there is a chance of severe thunderstorm development, with accompanying risks of heavy rain, strong gusty winds, and hail. Experts note that atmospheric conditions could also lead to an increased possibility of tornadoes, although this is not guaranteed.
Residents are advised to stay informed about weather updates and to take necessary precautions, particularly in areas where severe thunderstorms are anticipated. The impending weather could significantly affect outdoor activities planned for Father's Day, as many families traditionally celebrate with gatherings and outdoor excursions.
