Search Underway for Former School Shooter Missing from Psychiatric Facility

Mon 18th Aug, 2025

Authorities are currently searching for a man who failed to return from an approved outing from a psychiatric facility in Erlangen. This individual, identified as Georg R., was convicted in connection with a school shooting incident in Ansbach in 2009.

According to a spokesperson from the Mittelfranken police department, the psychiatric clinic reported the man missing after he did not return following a weekend outing. The police have since begun efforts to locate him, stating that initial assessments from the clinic indicate there is no immediate threat to the public.

Georg R. was sentenced in 2010 to nine years in a juvenile detention center for attempted murder after injuring nine classmates and a teacher during the 2009 incident, where he entered a school armed with weapons including an axe and knives. His sentence also included an indefinite commitment to psychiatric care due to the severity of his actions.

The clinic's officials have noted that Georg R. was permitted to leave the facility for therapeutic outings, which have been taking place regularly this year without incident. The police have checked several locations associated with the man, but he has not yet been found. However, they emphasized that, based on the clinic's evaluation, there is currently no need for an extensive manhunt.

This case has raised discussions around the management of psychiatric patients who have committed violent crimes and the protocols in place for their outings. Critics argue that while therapeutic outings can be beneficial, they pose risks that must be carefully managed. The situation continues to develop as authorities work to ensure public safety while addressing the needs of mental health treatment.
