Samsung Faces Existential Challenges, CEO Warns Leadership

Mon 17th Mar, 2025

The CEO of Samsung Electronics, Lee Jae-yong, has alerted the company's leadership to an impending existential crisis. In a recent video message delivered to approximately 2,000 senior executives during a training seminar, Lee emphasized the critical situation facing the organization, stating that it is a matter of 'survival or demise.'

Samsung Electronics, the largest conglomerate in South Korea, is currently grappling with significant challenges across various sectors, particularly in the semiconductor market. The company is falling behind in the development of high-performance chips for artificial intelligence applications, facing intense competition from local rival SK Hynix.

In addition to the semiconductor sector, Samsung has also seen a decline in its market share in both the television and smartphone industries, which further complicates its position in the global market. Analysts have expressed growing concerns regarding the company's financial performance, as its latest quarterly results have significantly underperformed expectations.

Recent reports indicate that Samsung's operating profit for the first quarter of this year may experience a decline of more than 20%. This downturn follows disappointing financial results from the previous quarter, which already showed a stark departure from market forecasts.

Lee has urged his executives to invest in future technologies, even if it requires sacrificing short-term profits. This strategic pivot is seen as essential for the company to regain its competitive edge in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.

As Samsung navigates these turbulent waters, the leadership is tasked with reassessing its strategies and operations to ensure the company's long-term viability and success.
