S-Bahn Services Disrupted in Berlin Due to Cable Vandalism

Fri 25th Apr, 2025

Berlin faced significant transportation disruptions on Friday morning as unknown assailants severed several cables between the S-Bahn stations of Humboldthain and Nordbahnhof. In an alarming act of vandalism, a 50-centimeter section of cable was also stolen. As a result, the S-Bahn services between Nordbahnhof and Berlin-Gesundbrunnen were immediately suspended, affecting lines S1, S2, S25, and S26.

Commuters in the city should brace for ongoing service interruptions that are expected to last until approximately 3 AM on Tuesday, April 29, according to statements from the S-Bahn.

The Humboldthain station has been completely closed since the incident occurred early Friday morning.

Authorities from the Federal Police have indicated that the perpetrators likely acted with intent, as the severed cables were located adjacent to one another and are critical for the signaling systems that control train operations. The police believe the vandalism occurred around midnight when no trains were running on the affected line. The disruption became apparent when services resumed in the morning.

At this time, the police have not identified any suspects or motives behind this incident, and no claims of responsibility have been reported.

In terms of service adjustments, the following changes have been implemented:

  • S1 Line: Operational between Wannsee and Nordbahnhof, and from Bornholmer Straße to Oranienburg, with a 10-minute frequency between Wannsee and Nordbahnhof. However, peak-time services between Zehlendorf and Potsdamer Platz are not currently running.
  • S2 Line: Running between Blankenfelde and Nordbahnhof, as well as between Gesundbrunnen and Bernau, with a 10-minute frequency from Lichtenrade to Nordbahnhof.
  • S25 Line: Services are available from Teltow Stadt to Potsdamer Platz and from Schönholz to Hennigsdorf.
  • S26 Line: Currently not in service.
  • S85 Line: Operating only between Grünau and Blankenburg.

Technicians are working diligently to repair the damaged cables, but the North-South route remains disrupted. Passengers are advised to avoid the Humboldthain area and consider alternative routes using local U-Bahn and tram services.
