Ryanair Delays Implementation of Digital-Only Boarding Passes

Fri 7th Mar, 2025

Ryanair, the low-cost airline, has announced a delay in the rollout of its digital-only boarding pass system, which will now take effect in November 2025. The airline aims to enhance the digital experience for passengers by encouraging the use of its mobile application. Previously, Ryanair had intended to make this transition in May 2025, but the timeline has been extended by six months.

The airline's move towards a paperless environment is part of its broader initiative to simplify the check-in process while also reducing annual paper waste by over 300 tons. This step aligns with the goals of Ryanair and other European airlines to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Nearly three years ago, Ryanair committed to using sustainable aviation fuel as part of its strategy to reduce CO2 emissions.

With the introduction of digital boarding passes, passengers will no longer need to print their boarding documents. This shift also eliminates the check-in fees that Ryanair currently charges, which can range from EUR30 to EUR55, depending on the airport, for those who do not check in online. Passengers will be required to check in digitally via a computer or the Ryanair app prior to arriving at the airport.

As of now, approximately 80% of Ryanair's passengers already utilize the airline's app, indicating a significant acceptance of digital boarding passes. The airline emphasizes the advantages of its app, including real-time flight updates and notifications about potential changes to gates or terminals. Additionally, passengers can order food and drinks directly to their seats through the app.

Dara Brady, Ryanair's marketing chief, stated that the transition to 100% digital boarding passes will significantly enhance the travel experience for customers, especially during the less busy winter season. The app will provide travelers with real-time updates directly from the operations center, including alternative flight options and assistance with transfers or accommodations if necessary.
