Russia has intensified its attacks on civilian infrastructure across Ukraine, with recent drone strikes resulting in fatalities and significant damage. Authorities reported that the capital city of Kyiv and the southern port city of Odessa were among the hardest hit areas, leading to widespread alarm among residents.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that during the night, Russian forces deployed a staggering 315 drones and seven missiles aimed at various locations. Among these, two missiles were reportedly manufactured in North Korea. The attacks on Kyiv were characterized by simultaneous assaults on multiple districts, causing destruction to residential buildings and igniting fires, according to Timur Tkachenko, the head of Kyiv's military administration.
Emergency services were dispatched to four districts in Kyiv, including the historic Podil area, as the military urged citizens to seek shelter. The full extent of the damage was not immediately available, but reports indicated significant impacts on the civilian population.
In Odessa, a medical emergency facility and a maternity hospital were struck during the attacks, though no casualties among patients or staff were reported, as they had been evacuated prior to the strike. Governor Oleh Kiper confirmed the situation, emphasizing the ongoing threat to civilian safety.
The drone strikes not only inflicted damage on buildings but also aimed to sow fear among the populace. Andriy Yermak, Chief of Staff to President Zelenskyy, remarked on the resilience of the Ukrainian people, stating that terror tactics would not succeed in breaking their spirit. He, along with Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha, called for stricter sanctions against Russia and a bolstering of Ukraine's air defenses in response to the attacks.
President Zelenskyy emphasized the necessity for a determined response from Western allies, urging that silence in the face of such aggression is not an option. He called upon the United States and European nations to take decisive actions to pressure Russia towards peace.
These recent attacks follow an unprecedented wave of drone assaults reported earlier, marking one of the largest nighttime drone offensives since the beginning of the conflict. Ukrainian forces indicated that 479 drones and 20 cruise missiles were launched in a single night, with impacts confirmed at multiple locations.
These hostilities occurred shortly after diplomatic talks in Istanbul, which aimed to establish a temporary ceasefire amidst the ongoing conflict that has persisted for over three years. Russia has claimed territorial gains in eastern Ukraine despite the limited progress made in recent months.
The sustained drone warfare appears to be a retaliatory measure by Russia following significant Ukrainian strikes on military airports within its borders that resulted in considerable damage to Russian aircraft.
