The ongoing tension between Russia and Germany has escalated as the Russian Foreign Ministry has summoned the German ambassador in Moscow, Alexander Graf Lambsdorff. According to reports, the Russian government is taking issue with the recent decision by German authorities to deny the extension of a residence permit for an employee of a Russian state media organization. This individual, along with his family, has been instructed to leave Germany by August 19. The Berlin immigration office confirmed that the man's visa had expired and that the passports of his wife and daughter have been confiscated.

The backdrop to this diplomatic row is the European Council's decision to place the media group associated with the individual on the EU sanctions list earlier in 2023, which has intensified the scrutiny over Russian state media operations in Germany.
