Trump's Tariff War: China Urges Immediate Repeal of Tariffs Amid Countermeasures

In a significant shift in foreign policy, the Russian government has distanced itself from the ousted Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, speaking to the state news agency Tass, attributed the swift political upheaval in Syria to Assad's failure to address the country's pressing social issues. He stated that one of the key factors contributing to the deteriorating situation was the previous administration's inability to meet the basic needs of the population during the protracted civil conflict.
Prior to the regime change on December 8, Russia, alongside Iran, acted as a protector of Assad's regime. The Kremlin, however, was caught off guard by the rapid advance of Islamist rebels and subsequently facilitated Assad's exile to Moscow as Damascus fell into the hands of opposition forces. Following this turn of events, President Vladimir Putin clarified that the removal of the Syrian president should not be viewed as a defeat for Russia, which has maintained a military presence in the region since 2015.
Lavrov further remarked that despite the Russian military's involvement in combating international terrorism, the anticipated improvements in the lives of ordinary Syrians have not materialized. He criticized the United States for its role in exacerbating the situation, citing the occupation of a resource-rich region in northeastern Syria and the imposition of sanctions that have placed additional pressure on the Syrian government.
This evolving dynamic has raised questions about Russia's future engagement in Syria and its broader implications for the Middle East. The shift in policy indicates a potential reevaluation of alliances and strategies as the region continues to navigate the complexities of ongoing conflicts.
