Russia Expels German Diplomat in Response to Berlin's Spy Allegations

Diplomatic tensions have escalated between Germany and Russia following a series of expulsions involving embassy staff. The Russian government declared a German diplomat based in Moscow as persona non grata, responding to Germany's earlier removal of a Russian embassy employee in Berlin over espionage allegations.

This development comes after German authorities expelled a member of the Russian Embassy's military attaché staff, citing suspicions of espionage. Moscow has now mirrored this action by removing a German official, reportedly also from the military attaché's office, as a direct countermeasure.

The German Foreign Ministry has strongly criticized Russia's decision, labeling the expulsion as baseless and unjustified. German officials emphasized that their diplomats adhere strictly to legal standards and stated that Russia's actions further strain already fragile bilateral relations.

Russia, on the other hand, has rejected the accusations levied against its diplomat, dismissing them as unfounded and characterizing Germany's moves as provocations intended to undermine the Russian diplomatic presence in Berlin. The Russian Foreign Ministry summoned the chargé d'affaires of the German Embassy to formally announce the expulsion and reiterated its stance that the decision was a reciprocal response to Germany's earlier actions.

The Russian authorities described Germany's expulsion of their diplomat as an act of 'spy hysteria' and insisted that Berlin was solely responsible for the deterioration in bilateral relations. Moscow stressed that its response was symmetrical, maintaining that Germany's decision forced Russia's hand.

This latest episode adds to a series of diplomatic disputes between the two countries, which have intensified since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine nearly four years ago. The relationship between Berlin and Moscow has suffered significant setbacks, including several rounds of mutual diplomat expulsions throughout 2023.
