Russian officials have reported that they are currently holding the remains of 1,212 Ukrainian soldiers in refrigerated trucks positioned near the Ukrainian border. They are seeking confirmation from Ukrainian authorities regarding the logistics of a transfer that would allow for the return of these fallen soldiers. The Russian Defense Ministry's representative, Alexander Sorin, expressed readiness to facilitate the return of over 6,000 bodies through both road and rail transport.
The Russian state media has broadcast images of the white trucks belonging to the Ministry of Emergency Situations parked along a busy road. These trucks contain the remains of the soldiers, which are reportedly stored in white bags. The situation has become contentious, with Ukraine alleging that Russia has unilaterally set the timing for the transfer of the remains without prior agreement.
Ukrainian officials have described the situation as an example of 'dirty tactics' employed by Russia, suggesting that their adversary is attempting to manipulate the process. The Ukrainian Coordinating Staff has emphasized their commitment to repatriating the bodies of all fallen soldiers, allowing families to have a proper farewell. They have called on the Russian side to engage in constructive dialogue rather than politicizing the matter.
Furthermore, the head of the occupation government in parts of Ukraine controlled by Russia, Yevgeny Balitsky, has released the names and locations of deceased soldiers via his Telegram channel. According to him, many of these soldiers lost their lives in the Kursk region, an area that Ukrainian forces recaptured last August, which reportedly led to significant casualties among Ukrainian troops.
Earlier this month, direct negotiations in Istanbul resulted in an agreement for the return of remains and a prisoner exchange involving 1,200 detainees from each side. However, as of now, the date for this exchange remains unclear.
