Revitalization of Berlin-Lichtenberg Shopping Center: Tierpark-Center Garage Set to Reopen

Mon 6th Oct, 2025

The Tierpark-Center in Berlin-Lichtenberg, once considered the least appealing shopping mall in the area due to high vacancy rates and pest issues, is on the verge of improvement. Residents have long expressed concerns about the presence of rats and pigeons around the shopping facility, along with the neglected state of its often littered underground parking garage.

In a positive development, the underground garage is scheduled to reopen on Monday, October 13, after being closed for several years. This announcement was made following discussions between district officials and the property owners. The garage will offer 204 parking spaces for both short- and long-term use, addressing a significant need in the community.

Local CDU representatives have reported receiving numerous complaints from residents regarding the deteriorating conditions at the shopping center. The issues of vermin and cleanliness have been frequently raised in local council meetings. In response, calls for improved maintenance of the center, which houses essential services such as a citizen's office, have intensified.

Efforts are underway to combat the pigeon population, with a specialized company engaged to develop effective management strategies. Additionally, the frequency of cleaning services has been increased in light of the ongoing concerns. Recent estimates suggest that around 800 pigeons are currently residing in and around the shopping center.

Despite previous cleaning efforts, many residents and local politicians felt that the results were insufficient. The property owner has since undertaken significant renovations of the garage, including upgrades to the walls, flooring, and lighting, as well as the installation of security cameras and a security service.

Following a change in ownership in 2018, there has been a concerted effort to revitalize the Tierpark-Center. This year, a vocational school has moved into the center, and plans for a daycare facility with 110 spots are also underway. These initiatives aim to enhance the attractiveness and functionality of the shopping hub.
