The recent leadership shake-up at Red Bull Racing in Formula 1 has raised eyebrows, particularly regarding the timing of Christian Horner's departure. Discussions surrounding Horner's position have been ongoing for approximately 18 months, following allegations of inappropriate behavior made by a former assistant, which escalated a simmering conflict within the team.
Horner, who has been a central figure in Red Bull's success, has faced increasing scrutiny from various factions within the organization. Notably, Jos Verstappen, father of four-time world champion Max Verstappen, has been vocal in his criticism of Horner's leadership, especially following a public disagreement with long-time team advisor Helmut Marko, who is seen as a guardian of the team's legacy established by founder Dietrich Mateschitz. With Mateschitz's passing, Horner seized the opportunity to consolidate power over the successful British racing branch, which did not sit well with some stakeholders.
Despite Horner's efforts to maintain control, the Thai majority owners of Red Bull ultimately sided with him, reflecting their desire to keep the current leadership intact. However, this internal conflict did not resolve tensions within the team, as other key figures such as designer Adrian Newey and sporting director Jonathan Wheatley also sought new opportunities, leaving many to ponder the future stability of the team.
Max Verstappen managed to clinch another title against the odds, yet the underlying issues within the team remained unresolved. Horner's struggles in selecting a second driver only compounded these problems, as he cycled through three different pilots in a short span. This decision further emboldened his internal critics. Horner was also involved in several public disputes with rival team principals, including Toto Wolff from Mercedes and Zak Brown from McLaren, which added to the perception of his isolation.
The situation is further complicated by uncertainty surrounding Red Bull's engine production for the upcoming season, especially after Honda's departure from the partnership. The recent performance slump in both technical and competitive aspects has been a crucial factor in the leadership change, with Verstappen trailing behind the current championship leader, Oscar Piastri, by 68 points after twelve races. Red Bull currently sits fourth in the Constructors' Championship, having garnered less than half the points of McLaren.
This precarious position has prompted competitors to court Verstappen for the 2026 season, despite his contract extending until the end of 2028, which includes a potential exit clause that could make him available to teams like Mercedes or Aston Martin by August. The Thai owners seem to recognize the risk of the team's collapse unless decisive action is taken.
A proposal to restructure Horner's role, allowing him to remain as team principal while distributing more responsibilities among several leaders, was rejected. As Horner prepares to exit, he leaves behind a legacy of six Constructors' Championships and eight drivers' titles won by Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen. The latter now faces a pivotal moment in deciding his future within the team, depending on the changes ahead.
