The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) has announced an upgrade to the Qi2 standard for wireless charging, now allowing for charging speeds of up to 25 watts. This latest update, designated as Qi2 25W, marks a significant improvement from the previous limit of 15 watts.
This enhancement positions Qi2 on par with Apple's MagSafe technology, which was a foundational influence for Qi2. Alongside Apple devices, a variety of Android smartphones from major manufacturers are expected to support this new standard. The WPC has indicated that some devices have already received certification, with hundreds more undergoing testing, paving the way for an anticipated launch of compatible products in the upcoming months.
Qi2 represents a modern evolution of the original Qi standard, which was first introduced in 2010. Initially capable of delivering only 5 watts, the standard saw an increase to 15 watts with the introduction of Qi2. The recent update expands the capacity to 25 watts, showcasing the technology's progression towards faster and more efficient wireless charging.
Paul Struhsaker, Executive Director of the WPC, noted that the potential for quicker and more efficient charging was evident at the launch of Qi2. He emphasized that the rapid charging capabilities of Qi2 25W are likely to enhance the widespread adoption of wireless charging while accelerating acceptance of the new standard.
The Qi technology struggled for mainstream acceptance initially after its introduction. The Palm Pre, launched in 2009, was one of the first smartphones to feature wireless charging. However, it wasn't until the release of Google's Nexus 4 and Nokia's Lumia 920 in 2012 that the standard gained significant traction. Currently, over 1.5 billion Qi2-certified devices are available globally, highlighting its extensive reach.
The Wireless Power Consortium, established in 2008, includes over 300 international companies, among which are notable members like Apple, Bosch, Infineon, and Mercedes-Benz. Earlier this year, during the CES in Las Vegas, the WPC also unveiled its 'Ki' standard aimed at powering kitchen appliances, further expanding its impact beyond mobile devices.
